Following graduation, Jim worked as a journalist for many publications including National Geographic Magazine, New York Newsday, The Village Voice, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and more. While working as an editor at Random House Publishing Company (now Penguin Group), he wrote his first novel which was eventually published in 1993 by Pocket Books under the title A Gentleman's Agreement: A Novel of Politics & Passion. Shortly thereafter he began working on another book that would become his second novel; which was published in late 1994 by Warner Books under the title of The Last Convertible: A Novel of Love & Intrigue.

His third novel was published by Warner Books in early 1996 under the title of Joe & December: A Novel of Love & Death. In early 1997 Jim began writing a screenplay during his lunch breaks from work until he finished it in mid-1998 after much hard work and much frustration. In mid-1999 this screenplay was purchased by Warner Brothers Pictures under the title of "A Knight's Tale," starring Heath Ledger and Geoffrey Rush.

In 2002 Jim received a Playboy Magazine Literary Award for Best First Short Story for "The Bus Driver," a story that originally appeared in Galleycatters Magazine. In 2003 Jim released his fourth novel entitled "The Year of Living Dangerously," under yet another pseudonym "Darien Anderson." In 2004 he released two novels back to back under one name: "Heaven's Shadow" and "A Fading Shadow." Around this time Jim also became a screenwriter for television with credits that include episodes for shows such as "Cold Case," "Law & Order," "Without a Trace," "The Sopranos," and more. In 2005 Jim also released his fifth novel entitled "A Gentleman's Legacy," under yet another pseudonym this time entitled "Ryan Connor." In 2006 he released another book entitled "Double Identity" under yet another pseudonym this time called Paul Girard." This book is a sequel to the 1995 novel entitled "A Gentleman's Legacy."
